Backyard Reptiles

My son found this little guy when we were at Home Depot.  He caught it and brought it back to our house.

After naming him: Trevor the Toad, he put him in with our turtle for a couple days...but eventually he hopped out and went free.  He was so tiny!

This is Bumps the Turtle.  We rescued him in the Fall of 2011. This Fall he will be 2 yrs old.  He has grown a lot since we first found him.  You can see from my son's finger how big he is today.  Box turtles have a very low survival rate in the wild.  We are hoping to better his chances of becoming an adult.  So far he is thriving.

I really enjoy keeping up with his habitat.  He has mud, sand, moss, and ferns.  We change things around so he doesn't get bored.    He mainly eats worms and slugs but will turn to a vegetable based diet once he is an adult.
And this baby ring neck was found in our yard and caught for observation only.  It was soon released after this picture was taken.

  1. I have always enjoyed catching toads! How fun that you all were able to play with that little guy for a bit!!! And your turtle is adorable...turtles are just awesome and I love how you keep his habitat fresh and new for him! What a lucky guy!!! As for the snake...cool for observations for sure but I got way to close to a copperhead and that was enough for me!!! Your kids are so blessed to have nature right at their fingertips!

    1. Thanks! We love having the turtle. We rescued him and his sister who unfortunately did not survive. Bumps seems to be doing great though. I'm not really as nake fan, but this little one didn't freak me out. We have copperheads and timber rattlers which I am very, very afraid of!

  2. I love your posts! This one especially! I think we need to move in together. Maybe we can combine our houses and just have one large animal habitat catch and release area. yup, that's happening.

    1. I totally agree. Your basement could easily be converted to living quarters, right? I will let Chris know we are moving. (I Wish!)

    2. It sure could although I think instead we should build a loft apartment above the garage OR a tree house. HAHAHA
